Foxtail Chains
These lamps were created during the course of a school project in which a manufacturer of so-called “foxtail chains” asked our class to come up with new uses for his products to celebrate the 175th anniversary of his company. Part of my approach was to flatten the chains between two steel rollers, thus creating a scale-like pane of metal punctured by small openings. After a lot of experimentation with the material, I came up with a design for a lampshade, of which I made a brass and a silver version. In further experimentation I also created torch-like lamp shades made from tubular versions of the foxtail chain.
